Monster Nursing
Rethinking the Job Discovery Process
Finding the Right Fit
Monster identified Nursing as one of the fastest-growing industries in the country and tasked us to capitalize on this growth of related job searches. To differentiate the brand from competitors, we leveraged Monster’s promise of helping users find the best fit by building a website which guided users along the job discovery process.
By personalizing the tools and information job-seekers needed to make sense of this complicated, often non-linear industry, we helped Monster stay relevant beyond the “Job-Seeking” Phase.

Aggregation of a “Fit Score”
Because Job progression within the industry can often be non-linear; By either changing specialities, moving to a neighbouring state, or taking on responsibilities outside of the typical job scope. We initially tried aggregating these factors into a “Fit Score”.
However, the logic behind such a score was tricky due to the number of tangents each applicant could veer off in. We came up with an alternative to display these possibilities in a wheel instead of a traditionally linear path.
The Monthly “Discovery Wheel”
By using an interactive wheel that users could click to navigate all the possibilities, we created an engaging and easily navigable way for job seekers to visualise what the roadmap for their careers could potentially look like.
Inspired by Spotify’s Discovery playlist, we sought to update the wheel quarterly with the latest industry trends, so that we could give job seekers a reason to return to the website and interact with the brand.
Building on the idea of Personalisation
This idea of checking in with the user beyond the usual “job-seeking” phase also allowed us to create evergreen content. We designed industry trend reports, job satisfaction surveys, and interviews with successful nurses to help users dream about what their careers could become.
By building a relationship and an understanding of our candidates outside of the “job-seeking: phase, Monster stayed top of mind beyond simply when they’re actively job hunting.
Putting it into Practice
We ultimately had to drop the discovery wheel. But the work we did in the discovery phase was not wasted. The understanding and data we collected allowed us to distill each Nursing Speciality into 4 elements. Daily hectic-ness, The amount of teamwork Required, The amount of time in the Spotlight, and how routine the every day work would be.
This helped users quickly gain a better understanding of what each Speciality required and decide if it was something that they were interested in. The landing page and Deeplinks also helped us filter users who needed the handholding and those who didn’t.
Fit, Discovery, and Due Process
Even though the Discovery Wheel and Fit Meter didn’t make the cut, this project gave me a lot more confidence in the discovery process because ultimately human insights and behaviours don’t change. By tailoring our solutions to address these concerns and fears, Monster had a better product which not only provided value and utility but also helped them better understand their users.
They were also very happy with the results of the campaign. We ultimately increased job views per visit by 30.5% and increased applications by 11%.
